Giddy Ghast ^u^

LOOK AT THE BABY! LOOK AT ‘EM!! IT’S A BABY GHAST AND YOU CAN RAISE IT AS YOUR OWN AND IT’S GONNA BE SO INCREDIBLE FOR BUILDING IN SURVIVAL AAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!

A digital illustration of: A purple carpeted happy ghast lifts off, rising above a sunrise-lit mesa, smiling brightly. Atop it’s head, it’s rider —a short enderman wearing a suit and a flowing, golden cape— happily slides down it’s window-sized goggles as she guides them onwards.

This is by far the best thing to happen to Minecraft in recent years, right next to ‘caves and cliffs’ and the bundles!!!

I’ve been wanting something like this in vanilla for so friggin’ long! My first ever fan story was based on the first word I beat the EnderDragon in, I made up a whole story around floating islands falling from the End, if this fellow was around back then I one-hundred percent would’ve tried making floating islands in that world!

Ghast’s have also been my second favorite mob next to endermen. I’ve always seen them as the two most fascinating mobs in their designs, mechanics, and especially lore implications, and I’m so glad to see them both getting recognition (endermen in dungeons and now ghast’s in game/movie). The Wither, illagers, and warden are incredibly fascinating in their own rights —don’t get me wrong, but ghast’s and endermen were like the OG ‘WTF IS THAT WHERE DID IT COME FROM?!’ X3

I adore the happy ghast’s design, the colorful carpet turban thing with the saddle platform on top, and the giant pilot goggles that flick on and off when you mount are just SO CUTE!!

But I will acknowledge the oddly high-res pixel art for it’s face... I thought it looked odd when I first saw it but I was way too hyped and thankful to complain about it, and I still am, I really don’t think it’s much of a big deal in the long run. We’ve got a floating platform for building that doubles as an adopted child, idk ‘bout you, but I can deal with the slight artstyle shift! (but honestly, if it’s the art direction they want to head in they should really just commit to it and change the OG ghast’s texture to the right pixel scale, as they did with the bat texture previously).

A digital, rough sketch of: A happy ghast floats through a white background, smiling brightly. Atop it’s head, it’s cheerful little enderman rider.

Some lines overlap where they're not supposed to in this image, but that is because I used a paper-puppet/animation style of rendering where each object/character is fully drawn out, in case things are moved around later in the process.

Idk why I made the goggles round at first, how foolish of me!

I tried out a different process for this piece, which started with this concept art instead of going from the simple sketch straight into lineart.

The original colors I picked got quite lost in the lighting in the final piece, so here’s what it looks like without the lighting. I really love how soft and pastel it looks, the light salmon and periwinkle works nicely for the Ghast’s skin, giving it a ghostly squid vibe I think! :D

A digital illustration of: A view above a blocky mesa, the sunrise illuminating the horizon in a bright-yellow glow.

Here’s the background since you can barely see it in the final piece! >w<

It was quite difficult initially, and I ended up making it extra sketchy to lean into abstraction and hope it covers up the scaling/perspective issues lol. The lighting and colors came out so good tho, it’s so vibrant!

On a fun bonus note: Since drawing this, the happy ghast has arrived to the game and I had wasted no time in finding one in my forever-world! Her name is Tabitha (So yes, that means the happy ghast in this illustration is now named)!! There’ll be a blog on that adventure at some point! :)
